This article examines women's experiences of place in three French-language novels written by Tunisian women. The analysis of this experience will lead us to consider the novels as a form of cultural critique. These literary works reveal both a deep respect for tradition and an urgent desire for emancipation. Spaces, be they private or public, urban or rural, traditional or colonized, are experienced very differently by male and female characters, who, because they cannot transgress boundaries imposed by tradition, turn to intermediaries to learn about forbidden spaces.
