Geography has its place in the curriculum of general and higher education in Saudi Arabia. The subject was introduced to the general educational system more than 80 years ago, and was inaugurated in the system of higher education in 1957. Since then, geography has been visibly present; the main universities in Saudi Arabia have geography departments and offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Saudi geographers are engaged in rigorous research in different areas of geography. The main forums for their research are the Geography Department Symposiums and the publications of the Saudi Geographical Society and the Kuwait Geographical Society. This article describes the status of geography in Saudi Arabia, its potentials, and its challenges in the midst of substantial educational restructuring in the country.
