Despite its frequent portrayal as an Islamist party, Turkey's Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, or AKP (Justice and Development Party, JDP) has not displayed an Islamic discourse on the environment, nor has its five-year governmental record been directed by Islamist concerns with respect to the environment. This article examines the environmental record and discourse of the JDP and explains the reasons behind its departure from Islamic approaches. The author argues that while the party has indeed shifted ideologically from an Islamist position, its approach to ecological problems and its proposed solutions can be best understood as extensions of its adherence to neo-liberal principles.
