Parks in Al Ain, UAE: Geographical Distribution, Opportunities, and Challenges

Parks in Al Ain city, UAE, face two problems: water and spatial distribution. Water consumption is increasing dramatically in the city as a result of increased population and the activities of agriculture and industry. Maintaining parks and saving water in an arid environment is a challenging task. This study examines water consumption by parks and the use of remote sensing to estimate it. Green areas in parks were calculated from remote-sensing images, and the areas were correlated with water consumption. The study also investigates the spatial distribution of parks in Al Ain in relation to population (equity), and demonstrates the use of GIS as an analytical tool and the value of remote sensing in assessing the pattern of relative household income of residents near the parks. Three evaluation indicators were used: number of cars, size of houses, and occurrence of home gardens. The appearance of home gardens on a large scale is considered a new phenomenon in Al Ain and reflects social and economic changes in society as well as representing an additional water-consumption challenge. Recommendations are made on how Al Ain can provide a model for integrating parks with green oases and natural valleys to reduce water consumption. The study's findings have implications for diverse parks departments within the city and cities around the world that have similar setting.

Les parcs dans la ville d’Al Ain, aux Émirats arabes unis, sont confrontés à deux problèmes : l’eau et de leur distribution spatiale. La consommation d’eau augmente de façon spectaculaire en ville en raison de l’augmentation de la population et des activités agricoles et industrielles. Les parcs sont considérés comme l’un des secteurs à grande consommation d’eau. L’entretien des parcs, tout en économisant l’eau, est une tâche difficile dans un environnement aride. Cet article analyse la consommation d’eau par les parcs et l’intérêt de la télédétection pour l’estimer. Les espaces verts dans les parcs ont été calculés à partir d’images multispectrales, et ces espaces ont été corrélés avec la consommation d’eau. L’étude examine également la répartition spatiale des parcs à Al Ain par rapport à la population, et démontre d’une part l’utilité des SIG comme outil d’analyse et d’autre part la valeur de la télédétection dans l’évaluation des revenus relatifs des ménages résidant à proximité des parcs. Trois indicateurs ont été utilisés : le nombre de voitures, la taille des maisons, et la présence de jardins familiaux. L’apparition de jardins familiaux à grande échelle est considérée comme un nouveau phénomène à Al Ain, reflétant les changements sociaux et économiques dans la société locale, et représente un défi supplémentaire quant à la consommation d’eau. Des recommandations sont faites sur la façon dont Al Ain pourrait élaborer un modèle pour l’intégration des parcs avec des oasis et des vallées vertes naturelles afin de réduire la consommation d’eau. Les résultats de l’étude ont des implications pour divers services de parcs publics au sein de la ville et dans celles ayant un environnement similaire ailleurs dans le monde.
