This paper has four objectives: (1) highlighting past and current developments in global geographical thought and methods in order to assess their impact on Sudanese geographers; (2) evaluating the contribution of early Sudanese geographers in helping to bring about a sense of Sudanese unity despite high cultural diversity; (3) making a case for an emerging Sudanese school of applied geography whose ultimate success depends upon the nurturing of geography at the university level; and (4) shedding light on the current contributions of geographers in dealing with environmental and development problems within the northern provinces of Sudan and on the negative impact of university geographical educational policies that limit the potential of geographers to address these problems.
